Gilded beds constitute one of the most characteristic typologies of Portuguese ceremonial furniture of the 17th century. The designation derives from the decoration applied to the wood, consisting of elements of bronze or gilded brass, cut, pierced, cast and chiselled, which contrasted with the dark woods used in their construction, creating the visual effect that gives rise to the name.
Monumental in structure, they frequently featured turned or twisted columns, richly ornamented headboards and carved finials, assuming an important representative function in the interiors of noble houses. Their quality and sumptuous character meant that they were particularly appreciated outside Portugal as well, being known in Spain as "camas portuguesas" or "camas bronceadas".
The production of these pieces reached particular expression throughout the 17th century, and today they constitute one of the most important testimonies of Portuguese ceremonial furniture of the period.
The relationship between what we see and what we know is never complete. The way we see things is influenced by what we know, or by what we believe.
